When you’re a Beloiter, you try ideas on for size and see if they fit. You make friends with people from all over. And you might even wear shorts and sandals in the snowy Wisconsin winter.

Interesting people wanted

Beloiters organize the annual Folk and Blues Festival and intern at an aviation software firm downtown. They take a $20 bill and turn it into a sustainable, globally inspired fashion business. They’re recruited to play football and end up falling in love with political philosophy.

Our normal is pretty extraordinary

When you’re comparing selective liberal-arts colleges, you’ll hear a lot about small classes, caring faculty, and rich educational experiences. Less common, unless you’re looking at Beloit, are:

Career Works, a one-stop internship, community-service, and career-prep shop whose counselors also teach in first-year and capstone classes
Immersive summer programs like Beloit Blocks and the Center for Language Studies that earn Beloiters credit in the off-season
Two century-old teaching museums (the Wright Museum of Art and the Logan Museum of Anthropology) run by faculty, staff, and students
Study-abroad programs where you’re immersed in the culture, language, and place
23 ancient Indian burial mounds on campus — protected historical sites that inspire some of our most beloved Beloit traditions

Into the Wilderness

Students who traversed the Boundary Waters wilderness area in northern Minnesota last summer learned – among other things – how to think about equity in their surroundings, understand a mining controversy, and explore the nature of nature itself.

Jalen Ponder’24 is a motivational speaker, an experienced entrepreneur, and a business owner at age 19. He shared some tips with fellow students at a Beloit & Beyond presentation, a day set aside to celebrate and raise awareness of student experiences outside the classroom.

JT Toepfer’23 is quickly becoming the voice of Beloit. As a sports play-by-play announcer, showrunner, and writer for TV, radio, and print on campus, JT hopes to improve his craft and draw from the successful career of pro baseball broadcaster Joe Davis’10.

Eva Laun-Smith lands prestigious Fulbright Student Award

Eva Laun-Smith’21 is one of two Beloit graduates to receive a Fulbright Student Award this year. A history major and decorated track and field and volleyball athlete, Eva graduated with highest honors from Beloit.

Focusing on accessible education

Moon West’23 has been most surprised at Beloit by how many different opportunities they have been able to take advantage, while also exploring the liberal arts and learning to become an educator themselves.

When field experiences ended suddenly, students continued to learn from the world around them, wherever they were, by observing social reactions to COVID-19.

Hannah Kang’22 is one of four student artists commissioned to paint murals in common areas of Peet Hall. The project, created and managed by students, strengthens a sense of place and community in this popular residence hall.
